STORY OF MATTHEWS COKER MILLS AND ALLISON
THIS PART OF FAMILY RESEARCH WAS THE HARDEST AND THE MOST FUN. A LOT OF MILES, 3 TRIPS TO NEW MEXICO TO RESEARCH RECORDS. TALKED WITH THE OLD TIMER HISTORIAN.
LOOKING FOR A MAN THAT WAS A FRIEND WITH CLAY ALLISON. AS I DROVE THE ROAD TO RATON,NM FROM MY HOME IN OKLAHOMA I TRIED TO THINK HOW IT WOULD BE RIDING A HORSE OR IN A WAGON 1867-68 WITH A WIFE AND 2 KIDS. GOING SOUTH AND WEST FROM RATON,NM TO CIMARRON,NM ON HIGHWAY 64 LOOKING TO MY RIGHT THE SANTA FE TRAIL CIMARRON CUT OFF IS RUNNING WITH ME TO CIMARRON.THE 80 MILES TAKE AN HOUR PLUS IN THE MOTOR HOME. HOW LONG IT TAKE IN A WAGON OR ON A HORSE OR ON A CATTLE DRIVE? THE FACTS ARE HARD TO PROVE ON WHAT HAPPEN IN THE LIVES OF JOHN HENCH MATTHEWS AND MARTHA COKER. IN TEXAS I USED THE CENSUS TO SEE WHERE THEY WERE. AFTER LEAVING TEXAS THEY'RE HARD TO TRACE. NOT BEING KIN TO JOHN, HE HAS A BIG PLACE IN THE HEART OF MY GENEALOGY. I AM IN CONTACT WITH HIS DESCENDENT JOYCE OF ALASKA. THE SAD PART OF THIS SEARCH IS THAT WE WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPEN IN THEIR LIVES. SOME OF THE LIVING FAMILY DON'T KNOW OR WON'T TELL AND THAT IS A LOST TO ALL OF US.
I STARTED WITH JOHN HENCH MATTHEWS AND GRANDMA MARTHA COKER WENT FROM TENNESSEE THRU TEXAS WITH THEIR 2 KIDS.{PICTURED WITH CLAY ALLISON,JOSEPH WALLACE MATTHEWS AND SAMANTHA ATLANTA (ADDIE) MATTHEWS.}TO NEW MEXICO WHERE JOHN HENCH MATTHEWS DIED. SOME STORIES TELL OF RATON, NEW MEXICO. IN 1866 RATON WAS KNOWN AS WILLOW SPRINGS. RESEARCHED CLAY ALLISON TO PUT JOHN HENCH MATTHEWS WITH HIM IN NEW MEXICO. CLAY ALLISON'S RANCH NEAR CIMARRON,NM IS LOCATED ON THE BAKER WILDLIFE AREA.WHICH IS ON THE NORTHWEST END OF THE PONIL CANYON THERE IS NO ROAD TO THE RANCH YOU HAVE TO WALK OR RIDE A HORSE,WILL NEED A GUIDE. I HAVE TALKED WITH ONE RETRIED COWBOY CHUCK, THAT WORKED ON THE PHILMONT RANCH HE TOLD ME ABOUT A GRAVE ON CLAY'S RANCH SITE BUT NO MARKER.THE LAST TIME HE SAW IT WAS IN THE 1970'S. THE OTHER COWBOY BUDDY, STILL WORKING ON THE CS RANCH,THE LAST TIME HE WAS UP ON THE RANCH HE DIDN'T SEE THE GRAVE BUT AFTER A 135+ YEARS THE LAND CHANGES.RESEARCHING ROBERT CLAY ALLISON TRYING TO FIND HOW JOHN HENCH MATTHEWS AND CLAY KNEW EACH OTHER. CLAY HAD HIS OWN TEXAS COW HAND. JOHN HENCH COULD HAVE WORKED FOR HIM THERE IS NO WRITTEN PROOF HOW JOHN HENCH CAME TO KNOW CLAY.JOHN HENCH WAS WOUNDED IN THE CIVIL WAR IN 1861/1862. I FEEL HE DIED OF LEAD POISON YEARS AFTER HE'D BEEN WOUNDED. ROBERT CLAY ALLISON WAS A CATTLEMAN, TRAIL BOSS, CATTLE BUYER, FRIEND TOO SOME, HUSBAND TOO DORA, FATHER TOO PATTIE;{ALSO CLAY PEARL WHO WAS BORN AFTER HIS DEATH IN TEXAS}THEN A GUN FIGHTER LAST.WESTERN WRITERS JUST TELL WHAT SALES THEIR BOOKS.SEARCHING THROUGH COURT HOUSE RECORDS, LOOKING FOR JOHN AND MARTHA,CLAY ALLISON WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT HAD LAND.
AFTER JOHN HENCH MATTHEWS DIED IN NEW MEXICO IT IS TOLD DAVID OBERDIRE MILLS MADE THE COFFIN THAT JOHN WAS BURIED IN. DAVID MUSTERED OUT OF THE CIVIL WAR IN NEW MEXICO.I HAVE NO WAY TO KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING IN CIMARRON,NM IT'S TOLD THAT HE WORKED IN THE MINES DAVID O MILLS MARRIED MARTHA COKER MATTHEWS IN Trinidad, Las Animos, Co October 08, 1871.THERE WAS A WOOD SHOP TOWN THAT HE COULD HAVE WORKED AS A CARPENTER I HAVE NO PROOF OF THIS. GRANDMA MARTHA AND GRANDPA DAVID O MILLS MOVED FROM COLORADO TO TEXAS.
IN THE 1900'S MOVE TO OKLAHOMA WHERE THEY LIVED THE REST OF THEIR LIVES AND ARE BURIED IN THE EL RENO CEMETERY, EL RENO, CANADIAN COUNTY,OKLAHOMA
