Could this be your James?
1880 census Bainbridge, Decatur Co, GA:
Category: Name; Relationship to head of household; Marital Status; Gender; Race; Age; Birthplace; Occupation; Father's Birthplace; Mother's Birthplace.
Mary J. EVANS Self W Female W 45 SC Farming SC SC
James D. EVANS Son S Male W 16 SC Farm Hand SC SC
Adnia L. EVANS Son S Male W 14 SC Farm Hand SC SC
1870 census Decatur Co, GA:
Evans, Mary J., 35, b GA
" Lella, 14, b GA
" James, 6, b GA
" Adwin, 4, b GA
2 young black servants, too.
Next door is William Evans, 15, b GA, probably oldest son working to help support the family. Note the age gap between Lella and James. I'm thinking the father fought in the Civil War, may have died after he came home from injuries sustained during that time.
Almost everyone on this page is listed born in GA. I think 1880 is accurate.
There is a William Evans in the county old enough to be the father of Mary's husband. If oldest son was named William for him, then was next son named for their father, Mary's husband? You might keep an eye out for a James. There are several soldiers named James Evans who enlisted in GA for the Civil War.
Happy Hunting (^_^)
