Seeking any information/records on David Calvin Cowan, early surveyor and settler in the eastern part of Llano County. Settled along Colorado River near Tow about 1852 and founded a saltworks after being led to a saline spring by friendly indians. A small community sprung up around the saltworks. When Llano county was formed, David Cowan became the first county judge, and conducted court beneath a large live oak tree near the saltworks, rather than in Llano proper.
I am seeking specifics about the operation of the saltworks, photographs if any exist, and details of when and why the operation shut down. (The site is now located beneath Lake Buchanan, reportedly under Maxwell's Slough.)
