I also pursued the "War of 1812" and basket women theory, based on the family stories. There were no Massengale's or varients listed in the Roster books for the Battle of New Orleans. There were 2 Massengales for the War of 1812. If memory is correct, I believe these are: William Reddick and Mathew. These lines do not include our William John Massengale that I can find. There were also 2 stories from the M&V book. One that he was killed while serving in the war. One that WJ's father was killed while gambling during the war.

The latest facts in William John's own words from the LDS on-line 1870 Census are the following:

William John Massengale (mispelled on census)
Born 1813 North Carolina
Father born in Virginia
Mother born in South Carolina

We must take John's word that his Mother was born in South Carolina. He may be speaking of an adopted Mother, but genealogy rules are to go with the facts. Another fact from this census is that he lived next door to Lewis Deeberry (his son) and his family. William John and Cassie Anne, his wife, lived alone at this time.

I am now concentrating on searcing these 3 states when time permits.

William John is my GGGGGrandfather - we are the family that stayed in Mississippi.

If you agree or dis-agree, please respond. I still have faith that we will find the answer one day.
