amarillo (special) - dorrance wilhelm funk sr., better known as dory, a professional wrestler in west texas since 1949, died sunday of an apparent heart attack at 12:30 a. m. in an amarillo hospital.. he was 54.
funk, who appeared regularly at lubbock's fair park coliseum's wednesday night wrestling matches and in other bouts across the south plains, was striken by the seizure at 10:45 p. m. at his ranch home in umbarger, a small community west of canyon. he was rushed by his family to a cnyon hospital, then to st. anthony's hospital in amarillo, where he died.
funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a. m. tuesday in the first united methodist church of canyon. burial will be in the city of canyon cemetery with la grone funeral home officiating.
a native of hammmond, ind., funk was a three-time high school amateur wrestling champion for the state of indiana, and during one of those three years, was also the indiana aau wrestling champion.
during world war II, funk served in the navy. he began his professional wrestling career after being discharged in 1945. his career then led him to the texas panhandle in 1949.
through the wrestling profession, funk became associated with cal farley, the founder of boys ranch near amarillo. funk agreed to 'help out' at the boys ranch for a period of three months in 1950. but, funk wound up remaining at boys ranch for three years as superintendent.
as a sidelight, funk continued his ranching and cattle raising work. he always kept abreast of the needs of the boys at boys ranch and other children in the area.
funk's wrestling career turned into a family affair when when his sons joined the profession. dory jr. held the national wrestling alliance's world championship until he lost the title recently to harley race in a disputed match. another son, terry, is also a professional wrestler.
dory sr., attended indiana university. during the latter part of 1972, he was elected to the amateur wrstling hall of fame at indiana u.
survivors include: his wife, betty; four sons, dory jr. of amarillo, terry of canyon, bobby of the home, and dony of the home; a daughter, doree of the home; a brother, herman of amarillo; a sister, dr. dorothy werblo of hammond, ind., his parents, mr. and mrs. adam funk of ruskin, fla., and five grandchildren.
