HARRIS, Elizabeth
Died bef 6 April 1864 when John Troter gave bond as Admr.

With John H. Patton and Charles L. Brown as security.

(Lew TN, Co Ct Min, 2/174)

(Terese's NOTE: Elizabeth Harris wife of Joseph G. Harris is still alive on 1870 Census)

HARRIS, Joseph G.

Died before 7 February 1870 when S. A. Whiteside was

appointed administrator with Charly L. Brown as security.

(Lewis County,Tennessee Ct Min, 1/606) J.C. Peery was

appointed Guardian Adlitum for Cora A. Harris, minor heir

of Joseph Harris Deceased, on 4 April 1870. (Ibid 608) A

suit was shown on 6 June 1870 which probably concerns this

estate: Sam A. Whiteside Admir. vs. Elizabeth Harris (et

als). A copy of this petition and Subpoenas have been

executed on defendants James W. Harris, Elizabeth Harris,

H.S. Harris, John W. Trotter, Sarah E. Trotter, John H.

Patton, Elfa M. Patton.

Publication as been made for Henderson H. Harris and Cora

A. Harris, Land is to be sold. (Ibid 2/4) On 7 April 1873

John W. Trotter gave Bond as guardian of Cora Augusta

{Also shown as Augustus} Harris, a child, with John H.

Patten as security. (Ibid 117)

My NOTES:

I believe Joseph G. Harris is Joseph Gilliland Harris, son

of John Harris of Blount, Tennessee and grandson of John

Harris and Rebecca McBay as mentioned in THE MIFFLINTOWN

DOCUMENT. In the Census it states that Joseph G. Harris

was born in South Carolina abt 1787-1797( Different date

given on 1850 and 1860 Census.) This corresponds with the

Mifflintown Document timeframe.

Elizabeth Harris nee Matha Elizabeth Bryant born abt 1807

North Carolina. She is still alive in the 1870 Lewis TN

Census, age 64 and her daughter Harriet is living in the

home. By 1880, Harriet is living in Parker, Texas with her

sister and brother in law, the Trotters. Matha Elizabeth

likely deceased before 1880 in Tennessee.

But, I wonder why daughter Cora Augusta is not living with

her mother in 1870? Also, who is Henderson H Harris? In

the 1860 Lewis Tn Census, the household of Joseph G.

Harris has only wife, Elizabeth, son James W. age 15 and

daughter Harriet age 13. They live next to daughter Sarah

E. Harris and her husband Branton A. Harbison. Next to

them is Elfa "Effie" M. Harris and her husband John

Hamilton Patton. Was Cora born after 1860?

Her mother would have been at least 53.

James W. Harris is the son of Joseph G. Harris and Martha

Elizabeth Bryant. James W. was married to Emily Tennessee

Harbison. She is a descendant from the family of

Alexander Harbison and I found this regarding her

family, "There is a family tradition of Alexander

(Harbison) being from Ulster, North Ireland.

He has a strong Scotch-Irish Presbyterian connection.

The theory of Alexander sailing from Ireland to

Philadelphia around 1760 then migrating to Harbisons in

Western Pennsylvania and coming down the great wagon trail

to Wilkesboro around 1767 seems to explain the data I have

seen."

Elfa M. Harris Patton and her husband John Hamilton Patton

(Family of Co. Robert Patton)

John William Trotter and wife Sarah E. Harris Trotter.

Sarah was first married to Branton Harbison who died in

1864 during Civil War. He was the brother of Emily

Tennessee Harbison Harris.

The Harris family were the longtime neighbors of the

Whitesides and both men were born in SC.

Samuel Whiteside was born Chester, SC on 9 Aug 1799 and

Joseph Gilliland was born 1787 in South Carolina. They

were neighbors on Lewis, TN Census.

The Patton/Patten family were Scots Irish from York, South

Carolina and later moved to Ellis, Texas and Stephens,

Texas.

In 1880 Cora is not in the Trotter household. It is only

William, Sarah and her sister Harriet Harris. Where did

Cora go?

Harriet T. Harris is married to James M. Peveler as his

second wife and they had son Walter Lancaster Peveler

together and resided in Hood, Texas. The Pevelers are

Cumberland Presbyterians in Texas which is common in this

Harris line, also.

While Joseph G. Harris and Matha Elizabeth Bryant both

appear to have died in Tennessee, their offspring seem to

have settled in Texas.

I would like to find more information on this family and

am happy to share. I would especially like to know the

mother of Joseph G. Harris. They would have lived in

Blount County, Tennessee at least when he was very young.
