Hello all,

I apologize in advance that this post is long, but I have a mystery on my hands:

My GGG Grandfather was Holden I. Drake, who was born in Shelby County, Alabama in 1836/7.

Does anyone know who Holden Drake's father is? I have no info from my research, other than that he was born in Alabama and died before 1845.

Details:
Holden's brother, James A. Drake, was born 1837/8.
Holden and James both list their father and mother as being born in Alabama.

Holden's and James's mother's name (I assume it's his mother) was Barbara (Barbary) Drake. I don't think this was her maiden name for this reason:

I found a marriage record showing Barbara Drake married William Atkinson in 1845 in Shelby County, AL.
William Atkinson was only 11 years older than Holden!
Barbary was 10 years older then William Atkinson.
Therefore, if Holden wasn't born out of wedlock, I think Holdon's father died by the time Holden was 8 years old, which is 1845.

On the 1850 Census for Shelby Co, he's listed as Holden D (Drake?) Atkinson.
W. Atkinson moved the family to Columbia Co, AR, where they appear in the 1860 Census.

On the 1860 Arkansas Census, Holden is 24 years old and has reassumed the surname Drake, but is listed under W. Atkinson's household. And so has James A., his brother.

Holden Drake married Laura Drake in Hempstead, AR.
Drake is her maiden name. Her family are descended from the family of Captain Francis Drake who has a long line and is much researched by lots of people. Laura's father was Paris Neely Drake, who was born in Virginia and passed through Madison County, Alabama on the way to Arkansas.

Could it be that Holden Drake is related to the his wife's family, maybe a cousin or 2nd/3rd cousin? I hope not but I realize that's a possiblity.

I can't find any Drakes on the Shelby County 1840 Census.
I cannot find anything that indicates his father's name or whereabouts, other than that he was born in Alabama and had to have died by 1845 when Barbary Drake (re?)married.

Another possibility is that Barbary Drake had Holden and James out of wedlock, and Drake is really her maiden name.

Or maybe Holden's father had a different surname, but when his father died, Barbary might have reverted back to her maiden name of Drake. She lists both her parents as being born in the country of Scotland, and I know that it is a tradition in Scotland that if your husband dies, you change your name back to your maiden name.

Holdon and Laura had a child named Willis Drake, who is my GG Grandfather, and they moved to Jonesboro, TX.
Holden and Laura are both buried in Jonesboro.

Other info not as useful:
Willis Drake had a son named Carl W. Drake who moved from Jonesboro, TX to Seminole Co, OK during the oil boom.
(On a side note, a lot of Drakes from Southwest AR also moved to Seminole, OK at around the same time).
He lived in Wewoka, where my Grandfather Drake is buried.

Does anyone have any info?
Thanks so much! - Justin
