MY FAMILY WALL –THE PARENTAGE OF WILLIAM REYNOLDS of Fairfield South Carolina, who died 1817, and was the 1st husband of Elizabeth Jean (Betsy) Montgomery. REYNOLDS, MONTGOMERY, SCOTT, NASON, RICE, ASBURY FORD, MCGILL, HAMILTON Some of the Montgomery's are buried near Winnsboro, South Carolina at the Brick Church also known as Little River Church and today known as Ebeneezer Presbyterian - Fairfield County. My ancestors traveled on to Lawrenceville, Gwinnette Co, GA, Troupe County, GA, then to Starkville, Oktibbeha Co MS, then on to Camden, Ouachita Co, AR...some back to MS, others to Texas. I know that Elizabeth is the daughter of Hugh Montgomery and Margaret Scott. His will proves. And so does Margaret’s father’s will – George Scott. Warrant of Appraisement is dated Dec 1808, funds dispersed April 1813, William Reynolds signs for Elizabeth Jane, Margaret Montgomery signs for herself, William Rice for Jean, and Berry Ford for Martha. In will, he bequeaths to sisters, Jean Rice, Margaret, Elizabeth and Martha Montgomery. My line of Reynolds came out of South Carolina sometime after 1820; then to Gwinnette County, Georgia (this is the Lawrenceville and Stone Mountain area) per 1830 census; by 1840 census in Troupe County, Georgia (on the Alabama line near West Point) ; in 1850 they were in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. William Reynolds son of Reynolds and Montgomery, 1st husband to Elizabeth Jane Montgomery (later McGill); issue: H.M. Reynolds, William Reynolds and Hugh Montgomery Reynolds b 1817 Fairfield District, SC d 1899 Ouachita Co, Arkansas (m Martha Anne Hamilton, daughter of William Archibald Hamilton. Elizabeth Montgomery Reynolds married 2nd James McGill of Fairfield District, South Carolina. It was at this time that the family moved to Gwinnette County, Georgia, the McGills’ show up a couple doors down from her brother Charles Montgomery, on the 1830 census. I believe that James McGill and wife and children are on the 1840 census for Troupe County, Georgia with her eldest son Malcolm H. Reynolds. James and Elizabeth, issue: James McGill and daughter Elizabeth McGill. I know that Elizabeth moves to Gwinnete Co, GA- living next door to her brother Charles. – Census proves/ I know that Elizabeth remarries – McGill. Family documents and CENSUS proves. 1830 CENSUS – Gwinette Co, GA James McGill – Males 1-5 1 (son by J McGill?) Males 10-15 1 (Hugh Montgomery?) Males 15-20 1 (Malcolm H?) Males 50-60 1 (McGill?) Female 20-30 1 (?who) Female 40-50 1 (Eliz) Charles Montgomery – (Elizabeth’s brother) Males 5-10 1 Males 10-15 1 Males 15-20 1 Males 30-40 1 Female 0-5 1 Female 5-10 2 Female 30-40 1 MY QUESTIONS: #1. What has happened to the other brother William? Did he die? Did he stay in South Carolina? Did he marry and move away? Between 1820 census (with Elizabeth and her 3 boys) and 1830 he has disappeared. #2. Who is the young (ages 20 – 30) female in the census? In the Georgia Cherokee Land Lottery, 1832 Hugh M. Reynolds is listed as #269, Eighth District, Second Section, Cherokee, Residence – Hamilton’s, County – Gwinnett, Comment – orphan. I am not sure which Hamilton Residence that this indicates…but Hugh Montgomery Reynolds marries Martha Ann Hamilton, daughter of William Archibald Hamilton, sometime before Jan 20, 1840 (birth of his daughter Elizabeth Jane Reynolds). This would put his marriage probably 1839 – Hugh Montgomery Reynolds at age 22… *** “Of all the states, Georgia has the distinction of being the only one to distribute parcels of land by lottery. This database is a listing of persons allotted land in 1832 from what was considered ""Cherokee Land."" Located in the northeastern part of the state, over 18,500 parcels were distributed by lottery in that year. Each record of this collection contains the individual's name, residence, and county. Additionally, it provides the district and section number of the parcel of land. For researchers of early Georgian ancestors, this can be an enlightening database.” –ancestry.com MY QUESTION – I realize that definition of orphan can be loss of father…but, #1. WHY IS HE LIVING WITH THE HAMILTONS? I can assume that these Hamiltons are probably the family of his future wife, Martha Ann Hamilton. #2. Could he be there because he is a relative? I know that they lived near/on Hog Mountain, north of Atlanta. Was he sent there to work on the farm? #3. Did Malcolm H. Reynolds win property in the Georgia Land Lottery? Where was he living? Does the middle initial H. stand for Hamilton? Could William’s mother or grandparent have been a Hamilton? Note: There is a David Hamilton who marries a Reynolds in South Carolina in 1774…just a thought… *** Notes are from a cousin that I found via internet about 12 years ago – An interesting notation is the McGill relationship to this Hamilton family. William Archibald Hamilton’s, (b 1795, father of Martha Ann Hamilton) grandmother was Jane McGill…William Archibald Hamilton is on the Georgia Census of 1820, 1830 – 1850 and 1860. I have been unable to find him in 1840. Zacharaiah Lewis Hamilton 05-07-1842 Buried Hamilton-Nicholson-Everett-Nicholson Cemetery Hugh Montgomery Reynolds moves westward with his family and both he and his brother show up in the Oktibbeha County, Mississippi Federal Census in 1850. But, sadly, by that time, Martha Ann has died during childbirth. Hugh Montgomery then marries his ”cousin” Mary Miranda Nason, the daughter of his Aunt Margaret Eurena Montgomery and her husband James Nason. They eventually move west before 1860 to Ouachita County, Arkansas. After the War Between the States, the children of Hugh Montgomery Reynolds and his first wife Martha Ann Hamilton return to Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi where many of their family members still reside. Those who returned were Elizabeth Jane Reynolds (married Capt John Harvey), William Henry Reynolds (married Eliza Jane Buntin) and Archibald Hamilton Reynolds (married 1st Martha Lavenia Patton, 2nd Mary Mamie Curry, and 3rd Willie Clay Heath) He outlived all of these wives. These Reynolds and their wives and many children are buried in Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville, Mississippi. Malcolm H. Reynolds, who married Lucinda Bradford, moves his family west to the Seguin Texas area. He died in May 1899 and she died sometime in the 1890s. One of their daughters married into the Moltz family, another married Sanford Brown, and two daughters married into the McGee family They are buried in Dugger Cemetery and that a marker on the fence surrounding the graves is marked "W. H. Reynolds". |
