Land may have gone to the stepmother, but I would still check. And, with minor children in the family I for sure would look for guardianship records. This wasn't to physically take the children and raise them, but was to report back to the court of any sale etc of the land and or estate. It was to protect the interests of those minor children. You just never know what will pop up in those old records.
