Fisher Co, TX wasn't formed until 1876. It was formed from Bexar and Young territories. So if the doctor was born in McCaulley it was probably in Bexar or Young.

"Republic of Texas: Poll Listes for 1846" compiled by Mullins, shows:

J. C. Hays, Bexar Co

No one on this list, in any county, is spelled Hayes.

You didn't give the name of your grandfather, if he was born prior to 1903 when TX officially began keeping vital records, it's a good chance your grandfather obtained a delayed birth certificate, which means the information depended on the knowledge of the informant.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
