Hi Betty,

This really is a mystery! Will Cross had been married to Cassie Richey Sanders (my great grandparents) and had the two kids, William Franklin Cross and Sallie Cross. According to my grandfather, William Franklin, he and his sister Sallie were raised by family members (not sure which family) from a very early age. We don't know what happened to Cassie, and Willie apparently left his kids and we don't know what happened to him until he is shown married to Jennie Maines. (Jennie Maines' mother was the oldest sister of Cassie Richey). The children of Will and Jennie (that my mother met) are discussed below. It's interesting that your Ann and my Cassie and Will have all disappeared. It's also very frustrating not to find further info for them. Please email me at simplerxes@yahoo.com and we can compare notes and hopefully come up with some answers.

The following is what little I know about this group.

"An older daughter, Sarah Maines, b: 1840 in Sabine County, La., is shown married to ___ Cross but I have not been able to find documentation showing the date or his first name. The youngest daughter of Celia Richey and Elbert Maines, Virginia E. ‘Jennie’ Maines, b: 12-7-1863, Conroe, Montgomery Co., TX, was the second wife of Will Cross, father of Sallie and William Franklin Cross. Will and Jennie married on January 7, 1885 in Falls County. They had two/three children: Elbert Eugene Cross, b: June 26, 1886 in Marlin, TX, and died April 2, 1952. According to his death certificate he died in the Veterans Administrative Hospital in Houston, but lived in Conroe, TX. Frances Cross (my mother), daughter of William Franklin Cross, remembers Eugene and his children, Homer and Estelle, coming to their house after her father died. It was the first they knew of their grandfather’s second family, until that time no one knew what happened to him. Later they visited Eugene’s home and met Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Cross and Cassie (not sure if Cassie was a Cross). Jennie married Jackson ‘Jack’ Young on August 15, 1891 and had several more children. Either Jennie and Will were divorced or Will died before 1891 but so far have not been able to find any record of either.)"

Confusing isn't it!!! LOL
