Thank you so much for responding and for your suggestions; I will follow-up with them. I'm pretty sure Anna Hawkins is not a relation; I have researched the Hawkins family in that area. Anna is listed as a widow on the 1880 census and I think she is the mother of George W. Hawkins--there were newspaper articles about her and her husband and George was listed as a child. Also, Winston is listed as head of household, but I don't think he owned the land, but rather was a tenant farmer and he and Mary Jane lived with Anna Hawkins, farmed her land and helped take care of the place. I was wrong about Martha Bunch (that actually came from an 1870 census I was researching about Mary Jane); but there is another person living with Winston, Mary Jane, and Mrs. Hawkins--a Malissa Hinkley? I don't know who she is either, but is listed as keeping house. I will keep your thoughts on this in mind though.
I was also wondering if you might know which newspapers were in existence during the late 1880s in and around Midlothian? I did find a reference to the Midlothian Argus operating during that time--was thinking there might have been a news item on what happened to Winston and Mary.
Again, thanks for your help and suggestions.
