The train wreck occurred near Zephyr, Texas, 19 miles southeast of Brownwood. Mrs. Kate Humphries was killed and five members of her family were injured. There were a total of 24 injured.
The Santa Fe passenger train hit a track washout on the night of September 4, 1902. My grandfather, John Coffee (1870 - 1973) was a section foreman for the Santa Fe Railroad at the time and his section hands were among the section crews that repaired the tracks after the train wreck.
