I have a story my grandmother wrote about the murder entitled "By the Log Fence." She pooled info from family members and even one of the Texas Rangers who apprehended Rushing, pulling him out from under his bed where he had been hiding. She documented the meeting with the Texas Ranger who was in a nursing home at the time but was still of sound body and mind. The Brown Co courthouse burned so those records are gone, but I do have the records where Rushing was tried and convicted of his second murder. Several community member petitioned Governor Hogg to release him as he had female children in his charge without a male to take care of them. His wife allegedly died in childbirth. Governor Hogg sentenced him to time served and released him.
In the documents about that murder it seems as if one of his daughters had been caught in a precarious situation and was apparently pregnant. Rushing and several men were working in the fields of his farm and Rushing point-blank shot the man who was accused of being the father. The eye witness testimony is unreal!
I do not have the article written by my grandmother you reference. And I have not checked Coleman county for a marriage license. I just assumed my grandmother had already gone that route unsuccessfully.
I work full-time and am a mother to two young children so my leg work is quite limited at this time. Any help is appreciated.
