According to the group records of Patrick Anderson, Margaret is the daughter of Thomas Gibbons and his third wife Elizabeth Hampton. Thomas was the son of Thomas Gibbons and Ann Epps of Hawkins/Grainger Co., Tennessee. The Thomas Gibbons/Ann Epps lines are well-documented.

The lineage for Margaret is circumstantially supported by the 1840 and 1850 Marshall Co., Tennessee censuses and the 1850 Humphreys Co., Tennessee Census for Thomas Gibbons. An 1872? letter from Margaret's older half-sister Nancy Gibbons Yarbrough to brother Matthew Gibbons further supports Margaret's parentage by saying that Peggy[Margaret], Joab, Ester, and Namon are all dead. Half-brother Matthew Gibbons moved to Polk Co., Missouri in the early 1880's. Margaret is named in the History of Polk Co., Missouri: "Archibald Hopper...married Margaret Gibbons, Harriet A. Rule Mitchell and then to Mary E. Mitchell (no relation to Harriet)." Margaret appears with Archibald and family in the 1860 census, but Harriet is the wife in the 1870 census and Mary E. in the 1880 census.

Thomas Gibbons who married Elizabeth Hampton had at least three wives: Malinda Chisum, Polly Hill, and Elizabeth. He is reputed to have had 26 children. We can name about 18 or 19, and census records support 23.

I have documented and followed Thomas Gibbons and can share extensive information if you wish.
