Thanks for answering my posting!!! I always watch and wait diligently for a reply. This is so much fun that I have to watch myself or it consumes all my time. Ha!
I have just begun to trace my family. I have sort of, off and on, looked for info, but this time I connected with someone looking for info on Johanna and Phillip O'Connor, my g-grandparents. He opened the world to me about Johanna's parents. I did not even know her name until a few years ago. My grandmother Mary Marie O'Connor Crutcher did not talk very much about her family. I was really close to her as a child and spent summer nights with her in her trailer behind our house, but I do not remember her saying to me one thing about anybody in her family. She died in 1966!
I have an old purse of hers, and in it I found letters from her sons from overseas during World War II. Also I just figured out a Christmas card that was in it was sent by Phillip O'Connor to her. I could never make out all of it, but my husband read it all!!! What I thought was someone's initials was in fact saying P. O'Connor. Isn't that neat. I have my g-grandfather's own handwriting! He died in 1937. My mother told me that when we were small, Granny's brother died and my daddy and mother took her to Corsicana to the funeral. I barely remember the incident. He died in 1959. I was 10 years old. I am finding out their names, who they married, census records, being given death certificates on some of them; it is just fantastic.
I went to the ship passengers' list. I found a family leaving on the SS Glassgow from Liverpool and coming into port at NY on June 16, 1943. On the ship's record it says that they intend to go to "Pokiupsey". My husband thinks that someone misunderstood their Irish brougue and they were really saying Poughkeepsie which is in New York. Got any ideas on that? They are listed as Passengers # 143,145,146,147,148, and 149 are James 20, Ann 40, Lawrence 16, Bridgett 13, Catherine 11, James 2 respectively. James' last name is translated to read mer??y. I think it may suppose to be Tierney! Maybe the "me" really are the letters "Ti." I am going to go to the original list and see what I can find.
The age is right for my Bridgett being born in 1830. We know that she had a sister she and her daughter Mary Jordan went to live with in Kentucky when her husband disappeared. I don't know the year that happened, but she is remarried and having more children by approx. 1855 or 1858. I'm soon to send off for Johanna's death certificate to see what they have her birth year as being, Johanna being the first child born with James Connors as father. On the 1900 Census it has her being born in 1858. But my Connors connection says that she was born in 1855. Anyway I have lots of sleuthing to do. Can't wait to hear if we have a connection.
