This letter was written to my father's brother in 1968. It's not 100%
accurate, but it contains a lot of information. I typed it from a faded
photocopy that was hard to read, so I couldn't make all of it out. I tried
to leave in all the misspellings, etc.
If you have any additional information about these folks, please let me know. I found the graves of Thomas Tierney, the railroad conductor, and his family. They are in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, MD.
The Tierneys we are relatives of as far as I have heard of came from
Mayo County which is the western most county in Ireland. There are others
in Armagh County in the N.E. section of Ireland.
Back how far I do not know but a Greate, Greate, ? & Uncle by the name
of Tierney was Lord Govener of Mayo County at one time.
Your Greate Grandfather Thomas Tierney and family was one of the groupe.
William H. Tierney Your Father's Father told me years ago there were 6
family that came over to this country in the early year's of 1850. His
Family came to Baltimore Md and he was the only one of the Family born in
William H. Tierney is your grandfather and was Born in Baltimore, Md
across the street from Montgomery Ward Store. The last time I was in that
part of Baltimore and for years past the rail road with street car barns
next to it fill the space.
Your Grandfather William H. Tierney told me his father died when he was
but 9 years old.
He had 2 brothers, Patt Tierney who at one time was a captain on the
Baltimore Police force. I met him when I was 9.
A brother Thomas Tierney also of Baltimore Md who was a rail road
conductor I met Uncle Tom he been gone
A sister Kate Tierney. She lived in Baltimore, Died about 1919.
The only children I know of Uncle Patts' was Cosin John, Gregory, George
Tierney, I never heard of any Girls.
Greg Tierney had one son named Martin Tierney, His wife name _____ ______.
George Tierney had 6 children his wife was Mame Mamie a son William,
a daughter I think Stella the other I forgot their name.
About in the 19st T.B. hit Cosin George & Cosin Mamie's Family when
finish William was the only one left.
Cosin John Tierney I never heard if he ever got married.
Uncle Tom Tierney his wife was Mame Kate, they have 3 children.
A daughter Ida I last saw her was in the sumer of 1911 when she taken
the picture I sent your father.
Aunt Kate Tierney married a Harry Sprol of Baltimore. Her & Uncle Harry
Sprol had 3 children,
A son Harry, Sam and a daughter Ellie, Cosin Ellie was the oldest.
Cosin Ellie married a Harry Winkler he was of Baltimore and they had 5
children, A daughter 3, Ella , Ida, Elmira and 2 sons Edward and Henry
Cosin Ellie Winkler daughter's daughter Ella I have not seen or heard of
since 1916 she had 3 children all small at that time. I don't remember her
Edward Winkler, I last saw 1919 he was married. I never heard his
wife's name or how many children.
Ida Winkler married a William Shultz no children 1925
Henry Winkler I last saw him was 1945 or about he was not married at
Elmira Winkler I last saw was in 1925 since I have heard she was
married but that was all I heard.
Cosin Harry Sprol, Cosin Ellie Winkler's brother, married a lady from
Eastern Shore, Chesapeake Bay section of Md. He name Cosin Annie.
They had 4 daughters and 2 son's Philamena [Editor: ?????], Helen ,
Harry, William, Ida, Katherine, all of them had married the last I heard
that was the summer of 1945. I do not remember any of the girls married
names or William Sprol getting married, But Harry Sprol Jr.married a girl
from Eastern Shore Md also.
We had a Cosin Edward Tierney, wife Agness [Editor: ?????] and family of
2 daughters, they lived in Anacosta, DC., m 1907 first in 22nd block Green
[Editor: ???????] St. S.E. then 1600 block of W. St., the girls names were
Cealy, Agness 1 boy his name was after his father Edward. They moved to
West Virginia the summer of 1907 and I have never heard of them since.
So now comming to your Grandfather William Henry Tierney Grandmother
Kate Louis (Batchler) Tierney, and family 10 children. Four Uncles, William
J. Tierney, Sr., Paul, Margurite, Frank your father, Myself Louis, Milton,
Dorthy, and Lula (Charles _________)
Your Uncle William J Tierney Sr., Aunt Nettie his wife they had 7
children 3 boys 4 girls. Elisabeth, William J. Jr, Louis E. Tierney,
(Chester), Bernice, Janette, Janelan,
Elisabeth she is the oldest and about 50 years old. Married to your
Cosin Vernon Iolie [Editor: ?????], they have I think 4 or 5 children. I
don't know the children's names.
William J. Tierney Jr. + wife Elsie I think have 3, William J. Tierney
III I do not know if they have any children or not.
Bernice I heard she was married I have seen her I don't think since
your grandmother Tierney died.
I haven't seen any thing of Janelan or Janette since 1941.
Chester lived to be 16 monthes old, stayed as small nearly as when he
Your Uncle Paul N. Tierney Sr. + Aunt Kate his wife - they had 4 sons
Paul N. Tierney Jr., Milton H. Tierney, Philip Tierney and Robert.
Your Cosin Paul N. Tierney Jr. and Wife I think have 2 children. I do
not remember his Wife's or childrens names.
Milton + his Wife I do not know if they had any children.
Philip + his Wife had a son, I do not remember his name or the name of
your Cosin Philip's Wife.
Philip was 42 years old August 1967, he past away from a heart atack one
day I think of his 42 birth day (of August 3).
Robert the last I knew + his Wife they only had one child.
Your Aunt Marguite Jane Tierney living here in Florida, you said in your
letter you know about them.
Your Aunt Lula E. Tierney also is in Florida (the same)
Birth Sept. 11, 1900
Me: Your Uncle Louis Edward Tierney + Wife Florance Lillian (Lloyd)
Tierney we only had 2 sons Louis Edwill Tierney and Thomas Paul Tierney.
Born Sept 7, 1935
My sons, Your Cosin Louis Edwill Tierney + his Wife Ann they have 7
children, Johny, Billy, Debbie, (Karren, Sharon ,[twins]) Carrie and Sherry.
Born August 3, Thomas Paul Tierney, my youngest son + Wife Alice
(Grove) Tierney have 3 - Philip (son) Theresa and Joan girls.
When I was born Grandmother Tierney said I was a twin but my twin was
stillborn. My birth day was September 11, 1900.
Your Uncle Milton H. Tierney was born September 16, 1903. He never
married and was only 18 years old when he died. Milton enlisted in the Navy
the spring of 1919 served on the USS-K2 Sub. Was injured while in Boston
Mass. He died in a U.S. Navyal Hospital from the injuryes said to be of 2
butcher nife cuts about the later part of October 1921 -
P.S. Your Uncle Charles Tierney who was born after your Uncle William J,
Tierney: Died at the age on 1 month old. Grandmother Kate Tierney told me
he had what was called Devils Grip and in those days many babys died as
Doctors those days were unable to do any thing for babys that young.
Your Aunt Dorthy (Dunn) Tierney was born July 23, 1909 her and your
Uncle Philip Dunn were living at Colonial Beach Va. At the time your Aunt
Dorthy died at the age of 48 years old. Philip died one month later of a
heart attack. There were no children.
You have met your Aunt Lula as she is in Florida.
Your Grandfather William Henry Tierney was born January 3, 1860 Died
Grandmother Kate Louis Tierney was born 1873 May 12, 1873 Died
12/22/49 Aunt Dorthy born July 1909 Died 1958
Milton born September 16, 1903 Died October, 1921
Your Grand Father William Henry Tierney served on Old Iron Sides battle
ship the year of 1880 and it's right name as it still about is
U.S.S.(Constitution) He was born 1860 Died at the age of 87 years old
1947 suffered with cancer for 4 years and death caused by same Feb. 3/47.
Grandmother was born May 12, 1873 Died December 22, 1949 Death caused
by Hardening of the arteries and was 76 years old when she past away.
P.S. In my travels about the country I met a few Tierneys quite a few, they
were as close as 2 or 3rd cosins.
Also Here in Wash. DC was a Family of Quakers, 4 cosins to us
Your Uncle Will Tierney has so many grand children and I guess some of
his children I could pass them on the street and would not know them.
I canot think of any thing or do in the future a long those lines I we send
it on to you.
