Very interested in the family name being changed from Turney.....
I am from a German speaking Swiss family which arrived in 1740s, the name over there was Thurny, two upon arrival in America became Turney and one Dorney. Some of them ended up in SW PA and Ohio, others moved south.....the name in old records in 1740s, 1750s has many spellings - Turni, Torne, etc.
I have also found records of an English officer in French and Indian War named Turney - his records show he was Irish and name was Toney - when he joined the British Army it was written as Turney because that is how the English pronounced the Irish name.....
Just wondered about your former Turney who changed to Terney to Tierney.
