There was a WILLIAM TERRELL who came to Lawrence County, Indiana in the early 1820's. From records that have been studied over the years, it appears he was married many times, with children from almost all the marriages. There is a possibility that he is the culprit with those of us who are having trouble tracing our Terrell lineage. I have studied the lines of his descendants but so far, mine don't seem to fit in with his. However, the Terrell Society plus other researchers from time to time have tried to fit my great-grandfather, Henry Terrell, as a child of William. I do know from family records, his tombstone, and death record, that he was born on June 20, 1823, and died May 22, 1873 in Lawrence County, Indiana and he was buried in the Huron Cemetery. Others have suggested that my Henry was a 'twin' to Wilburn Terrell, son of William from his marriage to Elizabeth White. Wilburn's descendants claim he was born on August 14, 1823. Now, of course, somebody is wrong with the birth dates IF they were indeed twins. Even more interesting, is that my Henry and his wife, Rachel Johnson, were living in Martin County, Willow Valley (close to the Lawrence Co. line) in the 1860 census. This area was always lightly populated, and very rural. It appears from this census, that Wilburn Terrell and his family were also living in this very area, and if one can go by close page numbers, his place was just down the road from Henry's. So,related or not, it is obvious that both Henry and Wilburn knew each other very well. I have a few questions for those who have descended from Wilburn Terrell; 1) What documents do you have for the birth date on Wilburn? Thought I would get the 'ire' up of some of you, and challange the date of August 14. We could also have an E-mail duel if necessary until it can be proven that one of us is wrong concerning our ancestor's DOB. IF both can be absolutely proven to be correct, then, Wilburn and Henry could not have been brothers. 2)Does anyone know who TIMOTHY TERRELL was, listed in the Lawrence Co. Indiana census of 1830? He appears to not have left a paper trail. I am suspicious that he was of the family of Solomon Terrell, originally of Chatham Co., NC who later migrated to Knox Co., Kentucky. My Henry named his first son, "Solomon". Also, the Solomon who was born in the 1700's, had land adjoining my ancestors and his name was mentioned in official business concerning them. Their great-granddaughter was Rachel who married Henry Terrell. John Terrell, brother to Wilburn, named one of his sons, "Levi" and another "Henry". My Henry named his youngest child "Levi", who was my grandfather, born 1862. pfg |
