Researchers claim that Francis Mauldin received a patent of land jointly with a John Sutton or Sutor. I can't find anything like that in Cavaliers & Pioneers [CP]. What is the source for this patent? The earliest patent I have found for Francis was 25 Nov 1636 for 400 acres on the Nansemond River for transporting himself, wife Katherine, and 6 other persons (his daughter Margaret was NOT one of those mentioned, contrary to some claims I've seen). Source: CP, 1:51. He renewed this patent a year later, possibly because the new county of Upper Norfolk had been formed. Source: CP, 1:74. Researchers claim that the surname of Francis' first wife Katherine was Sutton. Why? Researchers claim that the surname of Francis' second wife Grace was Bennett. Why? I appreciate any help. |
