S.O.S. Self Opening Sacks The first paper sack with folding sides that could stand up.
On June 12, 1883 the U.S. Patent office issued #279,505 to Charles Stilwell a patent for a paper bag machine. He sold the invention of the machine to Union Paper Bag, Philadelphia, Pa. Charles was born on October 6, 1845 in Fremont, Ohio. His parents were Dr. Thomas Stilwell born 1815 and Jerusha (Boughton) Stilwell. Thomas and Jerusha were married in Fairfield, Connecticut. Thomas father was Joseph and Ann Stilwell.
Charles enlisted age 17, 169th OVI Civil War. When he invented the machine he was living in Waterton, New York and moved to Philadelphia, Pa where he married and had 3 sons. He died 1919 age 75 Wayne, Pa. If anyone has more information on Joseph and Ann Stilwell, let me know. Thank you. vj.moon@yahoo.com
