I have many happy memories of visiting Whiteways, Cargills and Apothecaries in the Fort, Colombo and in Kandy. It was always thrilling for us living on remote plantations to enter these 'treasure caves' with polished floors. It may have been Cargills that sold 'jaggery toffees' little squares of jaggery and cadjunuts in wrapped in cellophane. A memorable X'mas toy which Santa had to bring from Kandy was a furry rabbit dressed in a frock. Never was a present so treasured. Have not stopped in the Fort for decades now. Hope this has all altered and some of those sturdy old places renovated instead of being torn down to be replaced with band concrete and glass horrors we find all around the globe today. There were trams in Colombo once too.
