Re: Norah Roberts book about Galle: There are some glaring errors: 1) My grand aunt Evelyn Gertrude Bowman nee Winter
cannot have marched proudly with her husband's V.C. None of my Bowman relatives ever spoke of him serving in WW1.It was their son Haverstock Bowman who did, I have his photo in uniform. So did Evelyn's brother, grand uncle Rev. Chas Winter who served as an army chaplain. We would surely know if any of our kin was awarded this honour.Furthermore, the early Dutch church in Galle Fort was built in 1640 remodelled in 1752 & 1755.As for my gt. gt. grandfather George Winter, taking Methodist missionaries,??Ignore all this please. George was baptised in the ANGLICAN Holy Trinity church, Clapham by the Rev John Venn who with William Wilberforce were part of the Clapham sect and very much Anglican. The Church Missionary Soc. was formed by them and Rev Venn was first chairman. George Winter took these first ANGLICAN (Rev. Robt mayor et al) missionaries to Galle and Baddegama in his ship, "The Vittoria" where the first Anglican church was built and consecrated by Bishop Heber.//The Methodists went to Ceylon about 1816 and their first chapel was built in the Pettah with the help of my German ancestor, Gualterus Schneider who was also cartographer to the British Colonial Army
