Hi, Mary Lou. My grandmother was called Rita Alterator. Her ancestor Agustin Alderete came to Australia from Chile in 1840. A Chilean descendant of the Alderete family has tied us into the main genealogy found on http://www.genealog.cl/Apellidos/Alderete/
which you can see goes back to Tordesillas in the 1400s. don Pedro de Alderete was the son of Don Rodrigo de Alderete and they are buried in the Alderete chapel in Tordesillas Spain. where don Rodrigo came from I do not yet know, but the family was from Leon. there are two possbilities for anultimate origin. One is a descent from a Conde de Alderedo c 719, a Visigothic prince who married a french princess OR
the name is Arabic al derete= of the land/farm and so the family is North African ultimately.
How far back can you go on your line? Can you tie into the Tordesillas line? I presume (could be wrong) that you are of Mexican descent? A Julian de Alderete from Tordesillas was in Mexico with Cortes, as the royal treasury official and involved in the torture of one of the Aztec rulers to find where he had hidden the gold.
