Charles M. Shelton enlisted as a Private on Oct 17, 1864 at Point Lookout, Md in Company "D" 2nd regt U.S. Vol.for 3 years service.Was mustered in Oct 31, 1864 at Fort. Monroe..Unit renamed 4th U.S. Volunteers by order # 152 on April 30, 1865.
Personal description from muster roll;
Born Patrick, Va, age 21, Farmer by occupation, Hazel eyes,Brown Hair, dark complexion,5 ft 7 in tall.
Present on all rolls. on Jan-May 1866 rolls is noted as on daily duty as cook in hospital. Mustered out at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas on June 18, 1866. Rank of Corporal at muster out.

The records for Co H 58th Va state Charles M. Shelton who had enlisted July 6, 1861 at Patrick Co, Va. Is absent listed as captured on May 18, 1864.Name appears on a roll of prisoners at Pt. Lookout Md dated May 30, 1864.
He had been captured at Bethel Churh on May 23, 1864.File states he joined U.S. Service on Oct 14, 1864.
