Your mention of Union Cross is just around the corner from me as I live in Greensboro, about 10 - 15 miles away.
Since the Quakers are well represented in this area, I'd try Guilford College for information on your JOHNSON lines. They were one of the first colleges that was Quaker-based and have an excellent repository of Quaker history in their library. Try them at http://www.guilford.edu/library.
Or, contact Old Salem or Bethabara Moravian Church, both of which are early settlements of Moravians in Forsyth County.
