I was wondering if Zebulon Vance, Govenor of North Carolina during the war, had any of the officers or troops of the 64th North Carolina Regiment punished for the massacre at Shelton Laurel North Carolina. Women were tied and whipped or hung by the neck with their toes barley scarping the ground, when their faces started to turn blue they would be cut down and hung again. A baby was placed in the snow with it's mother tied to a tree, the soldiers telling her they would let them go inside their cabin if they would tell where any men loyal to the Union were hidden . The result of all this, was the capture of 15 men, one a 13 year old boy, they were marched to a meadow nearby and shot. Some begged for time to pray, some died stoicaly...all were killed.
