Does anyone have info/sources for north Georgia Unionists ? I have a family
member (son of my gr-gr-gr grandfather) named John Bates b 1834 Franklin or
Elbert Co GA (son of James Shockley & ___ Forrester Bates), believed to have
joined the 12th TN Cavalry (US Volunteers), not heard from again after the
war. His brothers, William E. b 1833 and James Charton b 1843, were also
members of this 12th TN Regiment.
Those family members having only selective memory of the CSA loyalty side of
the family, now refer slanderously to the missing John, as "John the Slacker"
- whether the moniker was bestowed upon him early-in-life or after his
disappearance, I don't know. Clues anyone ?
