I can't help you as far as information about John Clayton, but we share
(and with others I suppose) a similar history. The family of my
gggrandfather (Absalom L. Duggan) and his wife Susannah Sanders Duggan
were forced to flee Marion Co., AL in 1863 because of their Union
sympathies and settled in Marion Co. IL near Centralia (the village of
Walnut Hill). His eldest son, Richard S. Duggan served in the 1st Ala
Cav and died in MS in 1863. The Duggans were accompanied by the families
of Clemmons and Caroline Sanders and Rachel Peoples, 2 families with
whom they were very close and intermarried. Two of Rachel Peoples' sons,
William L. and Francis M., also served in the 1st Ala Cav. They all
ended up in Marion Co. IL. except for my gggrandfather who died before
he got there. I'd be interested in hearing the stories of other
Unionist Southerners who were refugees to either this part of Illinois
or other parts of the North. (I think that's what this mailing list is
all about).
