Margaret:

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on the origins of the Southern Unionist movement in Alabama.

I only recently discovered my family connection to the Southern Unionist movement, and I am trying to find as much as I can about this part of history. My ggg-grandfather, James Washington Hallmark, was from Marion County, Alabama, and joined the First Alabama Cavalry - USA, along with his three younger brothers.

From what I understand, his family suffered horribly at the hands of the Confederate home guard, and his sister and father were killed. I'm trying to find out what could have driven those men to join the Union army knowing that they were putting their family in such danger, so I've been following this discussion with great interest. Thanks to everyone for sharing your information.
