George W. Hallmark was definitely a member of the First Alabama Cavalry - Union.
His older brother, James Washington Hallmark, was my ggg-grandfather. Both of them, along with their brothers Thomas Frank and John Madison, were members of the 1st Alabama Cavalry. Of the four Hallmark brothers who enlisted, only the youngest, John M. Hallmark, survived the war.
The Hallmark family of Marion County, Alabama, had one other son, William H. Hallmark, who did not enlist in the Union army and hid out in the caves and hills of North Alabama so he would not be forced into fighting for the Confederacy.
Hope that helps.
