Interesting thoughts.

So, does back-country equal mountainous?

My research has focused on Alabama, and there were sectional differences between the people in around the big, cotton-growing planatations and the people in the mountainous sections of NW Alabama. The people in the mountains felt short-changed in the areas of legislative representation and were further disenfranchised that the state capital was moved further away from them from Tuscaloosa to Montgomery, further south. The wealthy planters were Jeffersonian Democrats, while the mountain people were Jacksonian Democrats.
