Dear Don,
I have found considerable post-war tension between neighbors, much of which is exacerbated by political conflict duirng Reconstruction, especially vigilante violence directed at Republican voters. At the same time, as I note in my book, there did seem to be room for reconciliation if unionists were willing to abandon the Republican party; alternatively, it appears (anecdotally) that younger generations were able to bridge wartime chasms through marriage. Certain churches, notably the Disciples of Christ, likewise seemed to have tried to put wartime divisions behind them and foster reunion over the post-war years.
