Hello, I am working on trying to sort out Zasztko/Zastko family in Slovenska Ves, Slovakia. Specifically, I am trying to understand the meaning of what a "byname" or nickname represented and what "Halos" was supposed to mean. Presumably "Miller" was in reference to the ownership of a mill? But, I understand my Zasztko clan was the owner of the mill there, at least up to about 1911. I am now told their byname/nickname was Halos, but that the Zasztko family that owns the mill today has the byname/nickname of "Miller". And that my Zasztko family did not own the mill! Maybe he just worked there? I am guessing these Zasztko families are one and the same but have no idea what these bynames/nicknames were supposed to represent! The current Zasztko family seems to have owned the mill at least up to 1911 but I haven't been able to get dates yet. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks much. Thomas |
