Lower Norfolk County Wills and Deeds Book D (1656-1666), page 385. I don't know if this has been abstracted anywhere. I pulled the reference from my website - the section on "Ivey", though I could plow through my notes if you need more. The court record is very difficult to read, but it is a nuncupative will proved by Anne Carroway and Rosemond Millikan. It mentions only two daughters: Frances wife of George Fowler, and Mary wife of John Porter (Junior). Several other people are left bequests, but there is no hint of any sons. There are no later records in Lower Norfolk for male Sydneys that I'm aware of. If your guy was referred to in records as "Sir" John Sydney that would seem to me to suggest he was born in England and immigrated fairly late in life to America. It was extremely rare for Virginians to receive Knighthoods - practically unheard of in fact. If he was a Knight, you'd more likely find him in England. |
