Contributors to Ancestry World Tree at ancestry.com has this Shirkey family documented back to France. According to these folks, this family goes back to Andreas Scherger who came to Pennsylvania from France. Andreas had a son, Gideon, who had a son Andrew who had a son Gideon who had your William. In the U.S. the name Chartier has many variations with Shirkey being one of them.
