Fran, I have my data sheet on Joel with me and will list the key info I have on him. Most of my information comes from census records, a letter from Sandy Rigdon dated 7 Mar 1983, and an email from Avis Crews dated 16 Apr 2002. I show that Joel was born 28 Aug 1805 in Wake Co., NC. I have nothing that indicates who his parents may have been. He first appears on the census in 1830 in Bledsoe Co., TN as Joel C. S. Graves. On the 1840 census he is in District #4 of Bledsoe Co. In 1850 he is in the Eastern District of Bledsoe Co. He is there in 1860 and in 1870 a 64 year old Joel is in the 4th District of Bledsoe Co. Joel died 2 April 1875 and is buried in the Swafford Chapel Cemetery in Pikeville, Bledsoe Co., TN. Joel apparently married first a woman about his age as indicated on the 1830 and 1840 censuses. He apparently had 5 children by this first wife, whose name I do not know, before she died in the early 1840s. Joel then seems to have married a Mary ("Polly") A. Brown sometime about 1847/48. Mary Brown was born 18 Dec 1820 in TN and died 15 Jan 1887. On both the 1850 and 1860 censuses there is a Susannah or Susan Evitt from VA living with Joel's family. This woman may be the mother of Mary Brown or some other relative. I show Joel's children by both wives as follows: 1. Margaret A., b. abt 1828 TN, married Jesse Carroll Worthington, died 1856 2. Teresa, b. abt 1831 TN 3. Rebecca Jane, b. abt. 1833 TN, married a Montgomery 4. Elizabeth Brown, b. abt. 1838 TN 5. Jessie C., b 17 Nov 1842 TN, married 1.Angeline Dyer 2. Emmaline Sampson Brown, died 13 Jun 1905 6. Narcissa E., b. 2 Apr 1849 TN, died 26 Oct 1871 7. Statiere A., b. Jan 1851 TN 8. Reuben Patrick H., b. 28 Oct 1852 TN, married Matilda Louise Lee on 21 Jul 1875, died 18 Sep 1931 9. Joseph F. R., b. Nov 1854 TN, married Sarah Elizabeth Hale, died 1904 10. Rachel V., b. abt. 1856 TN, married Thomas Brown in 1875 11. Sarah Emma, b. 1 Oct 1858 TN, married Martin Phillip Hutcheson on 2 Aug 1877, died 12 Nov 1937 12. Hester Ann, b. Mar 1860 TN, married Jesse C. Moore, died 1903 13. Nancy M., b. 18 Nov 1861 TN, died 7 Aug 1894 14. William K., b. 24 Dec 1865 TN, died 18 Jul 1885 You probably have all of this and more, but I wanted to share what I have been given. If you see any mistakes or missing items, please let me know.
