Prrof of which of your ancestors left Scotland for USA is much more likely to come from documentation in USA than it is here in Scotland. Very few documents exist here which would provide enough information for you to be able to positively identify him.
As regards the surname itself, I would say that you're more likely to be descended from Milne's (a common surname in Scotland, especially in the north-eastern counties such as Aberdeenshire and Morayshire). If the family surname had been MacMillan (which has a completely different derivation, and which is more common in the north-western, Gaelic speaking part of Scotland), then I think the chances are it would have remained MacMillan to this day.
