My ancestors lived in Achnacarnin, Assynt. Murdoch and Effie (McNicol) McLeod were married there in 1801.
John McNicol made two marriage contacts, in February 1801, the first with my ancestor Murdoch McLeod for the hand of Effie McNicol, the other with Dond. McLeod (tenant in Stoer) for the hand of Isabel.
A genealogist I met in Dunvegan, in 2008, after looking at the marriage contract information, suggest that Murdoch's family were "of some means". Apparently crofters simply didn'nt both with such documents. In John Home's Surey of Assynt in 1774, I note that there were two tacksmen in that village, Duncan McLeod and John McLeod. I am not aware of any Duncan's in my famil tree. John however, is very common. It might be this John McLeod was Murdoch's father - then again perhaps not.
I located an early 1800s census of Anhcanrnin showing John McNicol household consisiting of two males and three females. That would account for John, Isabel and Effie, the other being Mrs. McNicol and one son. My attempts, thus far, to sorting out the many Murdochs on the only census I have located, been with unsuccessful, thus far.
Murdoch and Effie and their 5 or 6 children, emigrated to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia in 1820. There are no passengers lists available which indicate their names.
Their first born son was Murdoch born 1802. I have his birth information. I also have my great-grandfather Angus, born 1818 or 1819, the last child born in Scotland. One other son, Norman was born in Nova Scotia in the early 1820s.
If anyone would be so kind as to provide direction regarding how I might locate additional information on the McLeods of Achnacarnin, Assynt, I would appreciated. I would like to wrap up my search and passed my family tree information along to our two sons and six grandchildren before my expiry date arrives.

If of any information. I had my DNA tested by Family Tree DNA in Texas, USA. My group is I1-M253+. I recently had an upgrade and await those results to add more letters and/or numbers to the I1-M253+
I have received 8 direct and literally hundreds of "lesser" positives all over Western Europe - including one several hundred kilometers east of Moscow. England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden
and the easter USA figure prominately in the results. Yesterday, I joined the Scottish DNA Project. Now, I have to determine how to use any information available on that website.
