My g-g-g-g grandfather was named George [W.] Williams, and his tombstone indicates that he was born in Charleston, SC on Jan 5 1808. He moved to Pickens County, AL in about 1834, and became a prosperous farmer near Aliceville. He died Jun 7 1858. He was married to Elizabeth Watts, daughter of James R. and Tabitha Watts, also from SC. Unconfirmed family legend says that his father's name was also George William, and that his father might have been a British soldier in the Revolution.

In order to confirm any of this, I am looking for some kind of birth registry which would have recorded George William's birth in 1808. Were there city or county registries at that time, or would it have been recorded at a church? Are there church records available from that time period?

Also, is there any kind of death record available in Pickens County, AL? Are there church records available there?

Thanks,
Lauren
