I am searching for information on John Thomas Vereen (b. 12-1-840 in Horry County, SC; d. 11-24-1884) and his wife, Margaret Ophelia Chapman (b. 5-12-1842 at Sangaree Plantation, SC; d. 4-26-1884). Both are buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah, GA.

They had four children: James Allison Vereen, Harriet Ackland Vereen b. 4-8-1870; d. 10-22-1964), Ophelia Richmond Vereen (b. 3-25-1875 in Chatham County, GA; d. 1-5-1978 in Jackson County, FL), and Valcenia Ethridge Vereen (died at age 3).

John Thomas Vereen served in the 18th NC Regiment, Company L 7th SC Regiment Volunteers, and SC State Horse Troops of CSA. He had a brother, James Allison Vereen, who was killed during the Civil War and was buried in Richmond, VA.

My husband is a grandson of Ophelia Richmond Vereen, who with her sister, Harriet Ackland Vereen, moved to Greenwood, Jackson County, FL, soon after the death of their parents in 1884. Both married men from Green. There are many descendants of both women still living in the area.

Would appreciate any information that anyone could give us about this branch of the Vereen family.
