Need help locating 4 Hole Swamp (present location) -
I have bee researching my Clements family for 25 years and been unsuccessful in finding my immigrant ancestor. My brother has had the 57 Marker DNA Clements Online test and we have been must unlucky so far. I now suspect that a man named Goody Clements of S.C. may be my immigrant ancestor (from Ireland it seems)

My records and the S.C. records show that Goody Clements was a Scottish Quaker immigrant to S.C.in 1763/4. He Petitioned for Bounty Land and received 100 acres north of 4-hole swamp. Grant was signed 1770. The following information was taken from the Council Journal 30, page 209-214 - Meeting of 5th June 1764 "Read the following Petitions for Warrants of Survey......On the Bounty.....Goody Clements 100; John Rhoderin 100; Simon Frazier 100; Thomas Gown 100, John Gregg 100. To the side it reads: "Belfast Township". The Petitioners also produced Certificates of their good behaviour and pray'd to be admitted to the Bounty allowed by the Act of the General Assembly passed in 1761 which accordingly allowed them. John Little 150 acres at the Congress".

I ordered a copy of the land grant from the S.C. Archives. It reads as follows:

"South Carolina - By virtue of a Receipt from John Bremar, Esqr. D. L. Gen(?). and dated the third day of June 1770 I have admeasured and laid out unto Goody Clements a plantation or tract of land containing one hundred acres situated on the north side of the four holes swamp in Barkley County butting and bounding to the S.East by land laid out unto Isaac Poushey (or Voushey) and by all other sides by vacant land and hath such shape for wood and marks as the above plat doth refers unto. Certified this 29th day of June 1770 from(?) me Andrew Stevenson, D.L."

The square drawing shows vacant land, dogwoods, red oaks, maples, hickory and Isaac Poushey. with measurements reading N30E31:62

I contacted the Chamber of Commerce in Berkeley County with a request to help me locate this land. Their reply was that they thought this land is now in Dorchester County near the town of Ridgeville or possibly near Harleyville. I have obtained the names of two Clements men and plan to contact them to see if they could possibly descend from this Goody Clements.

I am wondering if perhaps the name should have read " Grady" Clements and not Goody. One of the men that I plan to contact is named Grady Clements. Perhaps you can help me with this info. I plan to request the men to take the online DNA test.
Do any of you know where this Four Hole Swamp is located? Have you ever heard of a Goody Clements?

Your reply would be appreciated. Virginia Clements Tuttle in Marietta, Ga
