This information was copied from The Hardwood Bark, a monthly publication issued during the 1920s "for the employees of the W.M. Ritter Lumber Company and subsidiary companies." In addition to articles on the Company and timber industry, The Hardwood Bark had a news column featuring human interest stories.(I have picture of this family that I will be happy to share. Helen) G C PATE - After an illness of eleven days, G C Pate, who was mill foreman at Colleton, expired on December 26th, 1923. He leaves his wife and three children; Artyce, 14 years of age; Gordon, 4 years and Donald, 7 weeks. Mr Pate was born November 6, 1884, at Havelock, North Carolina, and was reared on a farm. At the age of 16 years he went to work on a sawmill in Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1906 when he went to Colleton to work for The Colleton Cypress Company under the management of Haws & Sabin. He remained in Colleton when Mr Ritter bought the company and worked there up to the time of his death. His first job was Superintendent of the Planing Mill. then foreman of the Lath and Shingle Mill. After filing saws for a time he was promoted in 1916 to the position of Mill Foreman, which place he held at the time of his death. In 1908 Mr Pate was married to Miss Georgia Godwin of Havelock, North Carolina. He was a member of Carters Ford Baptist Church, Hope Lodge F & A M, and Dalcho Consistory 32nd degree and Omar Shrine Temple. Mr Pate's work was always well done and he had an enviable reputation in his chosen line of work. His character and reputation were above reproach.
