Judy: I have Howard Case's book but also info from other sources. Here is what I think is correct. Rachel Rutan (no dates) was the daughter of Barent Rutan and Annantje Van Rype, originally of Bergen Co., NJ(actually Clifton, now Passaic Co.) but in the late 18th century moved on to Sussex Co. She m (1) Matthias Van Nostrand in 1804 at Wantage Baptist Church, Wantage Twp, Sussex Co. She m (2) Peter Nelson (per her father's will; Barent died in 1820.)There might have been a third marriage. Rachel had a sister Hannah (again no dates) who married Joseph Shurte/Shuart in 1801 at the same church as Rachel. Part of the family moved to Steuben Co., NY abt 1825 and changed the spelling to Retan. Hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Jim Keegan
