Thank you for your reply Robert. According to the ships manifest when the family immigrated to Canada the nationality was Austrian - I have a copy of Josef's naturalization papers where he states the city of Czernowitz as his birth place in Romania. Could be an error with officials as the papers were made out in 1926 in Canada. The only other thing I am certain of is the family was very strong Catholic in religion. Four children were born in Czernowitz - the oldest was 12 years and the youngest was 4 years. Josef also had a sister who emigrated with them with his wife whose name was Rosalia Kuchta.
