Descendants of Andrew RACE

Generation No. 1

1. ANDREW1 RACE (NICHOLAS (REES)A, ANDRIES JANSE (RACE)B REES, JANC, WILLEM ANDRIESSED, ANDRIESE) was born 10 Oct 1768 in Egremont, Berkshire County, Massachusetts1, and died Bef. 1855. He married HANNAH J. ???. She was born Abt. 1776, and died 01 Mar 1864 in Greene, Chenango County, New York2.

Notes for ANDREW RACE:
Spon: Andries Rees & w Rebecca Prys (Paree). The "West Stockbridge Vital Records", p 74 & 108 indicate that this Andrew (Egremont Andrew) is not the Andrew (W Stockbridge Andrew) who was a son of John Rees & Mary Spoor and who died 27 Dec 1791 in 26th y. No additional information found on Egremont Andrew except possibility he might have been in Greene, Chenango Co., NY., near the home of his brother, Derrick.

The 1820 census of Unadilla, NY., shows a son age 10-16 among other children in the household. This male child would have been of the age of the William Race shown as head of a household in the Belfast, NY., census of 1830. Cemetery Records of Belfast, NY., record this William Race to be born 1805 with wiife named Mary, b 1808, together with a young (9m) son named Andrew M. Race and a daughter Helen M. Race (16y).

"From Raft to Railroad", by Cochrane, p37, 38, discusses a toll bridge across the Chenango River at Greene, NY., being on the Susquehanna & Bath Turnpike. The toll bridge was built in 1807 and remained in operation until 1838. A new bridge was built at that time and was toll free. An Andrew Race was listed as being a Collector of Tolls and occupied the residence provided adjacent to the Toll Bridge, Other people were also listed as being collectors of tolls at different times without specific dates. On p 114, an Andrew Race was mentioned as being at the toll bridge during the 1830's. On p 242, the 1830 census, Town of Greene, is reproduced and an Andrew Race was listed as "Head of Family, with 1 m 15-20, 1 m 40-50, 1 m 60-70, 2 f 5-10, 1 f 10-15, 1 f 20-30, 1 f 50-60". This family could fit the age 60-70 of the Andrew Race, b 10 Oct 1768, who was an older brother of Derrick Race, the early settler of Greene. The census information also indicates the family could have included a younger family such as Stephen with wife Lucina and two youner female children. No information found on any others with the name of Andrew Race/Rees in Chenango County during that time period. No death, birth or marriage records found that could be connected to this Andrew Race family. 1840 Census, Caneadea, Allegany Co., NY., indicates that Andrew and Johanna (Hannah J.) lived in household of Stephan A. (S. A.) Race. Stephen, Lucina and (Jo) Hannah lived in Greene, NY., in 1860. Unknown where family was in 1855. Andrew's wife Hannah J. (Johannah) was the Hannah Race that lived in Smithville in 1855 with her daughter, Rebecca Race Purple and son-in-law Thomas Purple. Andrew Rees lived in Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY., or about 25 miles east of Greene as shown in 1820 census.

"Echoes of the Past Annals of the Town of Greene, Chenango Co., NY., 1867-1967" by Mildred English Cochrane Folsom p 362 Brisben Cemetery, lists: " Hannah J. Race, wife of Andrew, 1756-1864, Mar. 1 (88)". It is obvious that either the birth or death date was incorrectly listed. If the birth date was 1776 then it seems likely that Hannah J. was the wife of Andrew mentioned as collector of tolls and the female listed in the 1830 census as 50 to 60 years of age.

More About ANDREW RACE:
Baptism: 12 Feb 1769, Claverack Reformed Church, Columbia County, New York3

Notes for HANNAH J. ???:
Hannah J. has been assumed to be the wife of the Andrew Race who was listed as being "collector of Tolls" in "Echoes of the Past, Annals of the Town of Greene" and the 1830 Census of Town of Greene, Chenango Co., NY. May have been called and/or named Johanna (Jo Hannah).

Children of ANDREW RACE and HANNAH ??? are:
       i.       STEPHEN A.2 RACE, b. 17934; d. 06 Mar 18604; m. LUCINA SMITH, Abt. 18254; b. 18054; d. 06 Mar 18844.

Notes for STEPHEN A. RACE:
Stephen A., Lucina, and Hannah J. are buried next to each other in Brisben. It is not known for sure where Andrew Race, husband of Hannah J. is buried. However, information on this family supplied by Tim Race email of 08 May 2005 observes that "a very large tree now occupies a possible grave site which is right in line with the other graves". Census Records indicate that Stephen and his father, Andrew, always lived in same household, first in Egremont, Berkshire Co., MA., until 1810, then, Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY., 1820, then Greene, Chenango Co., NY., 1830's-1840, then Caneadea, Allegany Co., NY., 1840/1850, and finally Smithville/Brisben, Chenango Co., NY., 1855.

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM2 RACE (ANDREW1, NICHOLAS (REES)A, ANDRIES JANSE (RACE)B REES, JANC, WILLEM ANDRIESSED, ANDRIESE) was born 1805 in Belfast, Allegany County, NY6, and died 02 Nov 1882 in Belfast, Allegany County, NY. He married MARY SANFORD Abt. 1828.

Notes for WILLIAM RACE:
A review of the notes under the father, Andrew Race, of this William discusses how this paternal relationship was established. Belfast Cemetery Records lists 3 unknown graves with this family group.

William Stewart Race in his "the Belfast Races of Allegany County" dated 2002 a copy of which was forwarded to John Race Powers Sept 24, 2002 stated the theory and belief that the William Race of Belfast, NY., was a son of Andrew Race the son of Nicholas Race of Egremont, MA. Further work by Tim Race and Donna Race Kneip developed additional information confirming with certainty that William Stewart Race's theory was correct.
