The first occurence of the name QUIBELL, and its variants appears in the baptismal records of a child who was the son of the French nobleman Joseph Duplaa Garat, a lawyer, and Madame Catherine de Garat. The child, baptized on September 25, 1740, was named Thomas. Arnaud de QUIQUIL, served as godfather while Anne de Laufarie, fom BENUS in BASS-NAVARRE was the godmother.

While it is generally thought that this family grouping were Huguenots, which is most unlikely, the geographical locale of its appearance noted above places it in historical SEPTIMANIA, making its origins most likely JEWISH. In its original Jewish form QUIBELL appears as KIBEL. (The reader might like to check out JAIZKIBEL).

Septimania was located in what is now Southern France and Northern Spain, also known as the Basque Region. (Benus, Bass-Navarre is a locale in this region). Septimania was a predominately Jewish region during the 700's, and was ruled by a Jewish Davidic hereditary king. During the Inquisition many of these Jews were forcibly converted to Christianity and were referred to as 'Marranos' (a derogatory term meaning 'pig'). Those who did convert, and there were many of them and have since been considered 'lost', changed or 'Christianized' their names to conceal their Jewish origins. It is also highly probable that the original Jewish KIBEL would have been spelt as it sounded to it hearers, thus for the French the 'Ki' would have sounded like the French 'Qui' and spelt accordingly.
