I exchanged a long series of emails back in 1996 with a Chris Yoder of Battle Creek, MI. Chris referenced an account written by Jerusha Hill Hayden, then 71, written in 1847, which gave the story that Frederick Platts came from Germany at the age of 18, attempted to return but was shipwrecked three times, etc., etc. Note that Frederick spelled the name "Platts." The gravestone of his son, Obadiah, may still be seen in the cemetery in Winthrop on Route 80 in the town of Deep River, also spelling the name "Platts." This indicated to me that the name may well have been Platz back in Germany. I'm sure that Chris Yoder's email address is no longer valid (it was CompuServe), but his address is/was 203 Lakeshire Road, Battle Creek, MI 49015. I agree that a DNA sample or two from a male Platt descendant would go a long way toward settling this. I don't believe that anyone from this family has joined the project yet.
