Pat,
See if this link gives you a little info about John T. being related to Shadrack and Athaliza Pinkston...

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dkcoleman&id=I0668

It says:
"Among the first Pinkstons to settle in this state was one named Shadrack, who married Athaliza Carroll. He was a member of George Washington's personal Honor Guard, sometimes called "Life Guard," during the Revolutionary War. Many of the descendants of Shadrack Pinkston eventually lived in Parrott, Terrell County, Georgia.
There are not too many proven facts recorded at this time about the first Pinkston, as the family moved from Virginia to Wilkes County, Georgia after Shadrack's illness and honorable discharge from the Revolutionary Army. He fought in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, PA in 1777. There is a small book in the D.A.R. Library in Washington called "The Commander in Chief's Guard," which gives a printed account of each member of the Honor Guard and Shadrack Pinkston's service is recorded on page 226. One of the genealogists in Washington expressed her belief that Mr. Pinkston must have lived in Fairfax County, Virginia." Information furnished by Miss Charlie Pinkston Parrott, GA, in November, 1998.

Hope that helps....
