I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. Nathan Newell Finney was the son of Apollus Finney and Phoebe Buck. They also had a son named Nelson. Nathan Newell Finney is the grandfather of Mame Phinney. The surname was changed during her father's generation because when Allen enlisted in Co. G, 1st U.S. Sharpshooters (from WI), the person who enlisted him spelled Allen's surname Phinney. When he applied for a spelling correction, he was told that this could not be done so he began using Phinney as his legal name. I would like to know the connection to your Nelson Finney, if there is one. Thank you! Lynne B. Howell
